What Is SEO & How Can It Benefit My Sheffield, Barnsley or U.K. Business?
SEO: ranking naturally for search terms, on the left hand side of the search results pages. You do not pay the search engines to appear here.
PPC: bidding on specific keywords and paying the search engines to appear at the top and down the right hand side of results pages.
SEO Information From Sheffield & Barnsley Based Search Marketing Trainers
SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation is a process which allows your website to be "read" by Google and the rest of the search engines, and then ranked according to its relevance within your industry - the higher the ranking, the more traffic your website receives.

The Nutshell - How SEO Works
Fancy a little role play? Ok, here we go:
- Imagine that your website is a book...
- ...and imagine that Google is the worlds biggest library (we'll use Google in this case but don't forget Bing and Yahoo too)
Ok, now imagine that Google has to do 3 things to determine where abouts your website should rank:
- Figure out what your book (website) says.
Best practice coding techniques allow Google et al to read your website and "index" it. If your website is hard to read, how can Google decide whether it's worthy of a high ranking?
- Decide which shelf your book should go on in the library (i.e. what sector or topics does your book cover?).
How relevant is your content to the searcher? Your relevance in a particular field determines which searches will result in your website being displayed. This is defined by identifying keywords and high quality content to place within your website, ready for Google to read.
- Finally, once Google has read your book and decided which shelf to put it on, it needs to figure out how popular your book is so it knows how high up the shelf to put it.
Authority and popularity on the web is defined by the number of high quality links to your site, with each link counting as a "vote" in favour of your website. The higher the number of quality votes, the more trust, authority and prominence your site garners; resulting in a huge boost in search rankings.
Remember: Google is constantly trying to provide the best results to people searching. This is done through relevance to the searcher's terms; if you have an industry relevant, highly trusted website then search rankings are hugely boosted.
There are many other factors which influence search rankings, but broadly speaking the above covers it.

SEO Practices To Avoid
There are certain practices which the search engines deem "black hat". These are techniques which can rapidly lead to a ban from Google entirely, resulting in many, many lost enquiries and potential sales.
Keyword stuffing, links from so-called "link farms" and spam driven content are some examples of these techniques; techniques which we at The Design Loft know about and strictly avoid.
